How to Move a Screen Via an S-Cable From a Laptop to a TV

A laptop with an s-video port allows you to connect the computer to a TV via an output cable. This feature allows you to use the TV as a monitor. Windows does not send video output to the port by default, unless you first enable projector mode. The projector mode can duplicate the laptop screen, extend the screen to the TV, or turn off the laptop screen while sending video to the TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the s-video cable into the output port on your laptop. Plug the other end of the cable into the s-video input on your TV.

    • 2

Hold down the Windows key and press the "P" key. A screen will appear asking you to choose a display option.

    • 3

Click "Duplicate" to mirror the laptop's screen on the TV. Select "Projector only" to turn off the screen on the laptop and use the TV.

Tips & Warnings

  • This method also works for laptops that use HDMI, DVI or VGA output.

  • S-video cables only carry video data. If you want audio to play through the TV speakers, you must connect the RCA inputs on the TV to the headphone jack on the laptop. You can use an RCA to 3.5mm adapter to plug in the cables.
