How to Run a Multisession on Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox Web browser creates a single profile for each user account by default. Each profile contains its own settings, bookmarks, extensions and other user data. You can use Firefox’s profile manager to create multiple profiles on a single user account and run multiple sessions of Firefox at the same time, with different configurations. By default, Firefox allows one profile to run at a time. The “-no-remote” option overrides this restriction. Multiple Firefox sessions are intended for extension developers and can be useful to test extensions or troubleshoot specific problems without shutting down your main Firefox profile.

Instructions

    • 1

Close open Firefox windows by clicking the “Firefox” button and clicking “Exit.” Click the “File” menu if you don’t see a Firefox button.

    • 2

Click “Start,” type “Firefox.exe -ProfileManager -No-Remote” into the search box in the Start menu and press “Enter.” The Firefox profile manager appears.

    • 3

Create a new profile: Click the “Create Profile” button, click “Next,” type a name for your new profile, and click “Finish.”

    • 4

Select a Firefox profile by clicking its name in the list, and click “Start Firefox” to start a Firefox session with that profile.

    • 5

Launch Firefox with the “Firefox.exe -ProfileManager -No-Remote” command again from the Start menu, and select a different profile.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the “Firefox.exe -ProfileManager -No-Remote” command each time you launch Firefox. You can modify any existing Firefox shortcuts to use this command.

  • Multiple profiles and the profile manager are advanced features of Firefox designed for extension developers, according to Mozilla. Firefox's default profile is sufficient for the vast majority of users; don't run multiple Firefox sessions unless you have a specific need to do so.
