How to Keep Drainage in Plumbing From Clogging

How to Keep Drainage in Plumbing From Clogging thumbnail
Hair and built-up materials in bathtub drains are one of the main causes of clogged drains in homes.

Clogged drains are usually cleared easily using chemicals, boiling water or a plumbers snake, which is a bendable metal rod that can be forced through a drain to dislodge any clogged material. A plunger can be used to unblock most clogs in a drain by forcing the rubber end of the plunger down onto the drain hole numerous times. In most respects it is easier to prevent the clogs forming by not pouring materials that can clog a drainage system down a bathroom or kitchen sink. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unfasten the screws that hold the drain stopper in place and put them safely away from the sink or bathtub. Pry the drain stopper upward using the end of a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove any hair or debris from the stopper and wipe with a clean, damp cloth. Wipe around the edge of the sink or bathtub with a damp cloth to remove any hair or dirt that has built up around the drain entrance. Replace the stopper and insert the screws tightly.

    • 3

Boil a kettle or pan filled with water to a rapid boil. Pour the boiling water down the drain to dissolve any hair or debris built up in the drain and stop the buildup of clogged material. Repeat this process once a month to keep drains free of clogs.

    • 4

Place a rubber or plastic drain insert over the drain in sinks or bathtubs to catch hair or debris that makes its way down the drain. Periodically clean the drain insert by scraping debris into a trash can.

    • 5

Scrape cooking oil or grease into used cans and place into a trash can instead of pouring the used oil or grease into a sink or bathtub drain. Ensure debris, such as coffee grounds, is placed into trash cans and not poured down the drain.
