How to Break Off the Color in Crochet

Break wool yarn with your hands when crocheting.

When changing colors or ending a row in crochet, it is necessary to break the working yarn, which is the yarn coming from the skein. Yarns made of wool or other animal fibers, as well as some cellulose-based yarns like cotton, will break when you pull on them. Synthetic fibers and novelty yarns usually require cutting with scissors. Breaking the yarn leaves you with a short yarn tail, which you can weave in with a darning needle or crochet hook.

Instructions

    • 1

Work to the end of the row at which you want to break the yarn.

    • 2

Hold the yarn with one hand at the point you want to break it, which should be at least 3 inches from your hook.

    • 3

Pull on the working yarn with your other hand. The yarn should break where you are holding it.

    • 4

Thread the yarn tail through the last loop on your hook.

    • 5

Grab the tail with your hook as you would when making a crochet hook. Pull the tail all the way through the last stitch and give it a tug to make a knot.
