The key to crocheting knit-look booties is to create a tight fabric. Depending on the yarn and crochet hook used, the fabric can be loose or very stiff; knitted fabric tends to be compact but soft. Fortunately, there are crochet techniques that can help you create that soft but dense fabric knitted booties have.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Choose a pattern that uses a crochet hook smaller than is typical for the yarn. Patterns that use worsted weight yarn usually suggest a hook size I, J or K. Working with a "D" hook and worsted weight yarn will yield a denser fabric that looks knitted.

Tighten your crochet by catching the loop under the row in which you would normally catch the work. Do this every other or every fourth row. With the wrong side of the work facing you, catch the front loop one row below the top row to pull the work tighter. Either choose a pattern with this technique or adapt the pattern you want to use. The pattern should include the dimensions of the finished fabric. Since your fabric will be denser, you may need to add additional rows to achieve the required length.

Work the booties using a half double crochet stitch. This stitch looks more like knitting than single crochet. If you combine this stitch with catching the loop from the row below as explained in Step 2, you can achieve the ribbing characteristic of knitting.
