How to Make Bookmark Tassels

A tassel on a bookmark helps you find your place more easily.

Many board and laminated bookmarks feature tassels that help keep them from sliding into books and making them difficult to find. These tassels are often made from yarn that matches the color of the bookmark. However, with frequent use, the tassel may become dirty or may even wear out and break off. Instead of throwing out the bookmark or using it without the tassel, you can replace it with one of your own or make a brand new bookmark.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of yarn that measures about 8 inches long and several more pieces measuring 3 inches. A tassel requires at least five 3-inch pieces.

    • 2

Gather the 3-inch pieces together in one bunch. Set them aside.

    • 3

Fold the 8-inch piece of yarn in half. Lay the bunch of 3-inch pieces across the cut ends of the folded piece of yarn so the ends extend about 1/2 inch beyond the yarn bunch.

    • 4

Wrap the ends of the folded piece of yarn over the middle of the 3-inch yarn bunch and tie the ends around the bunch using a double knot. Pull the knot tight.

    • 5

Bend the 3-inch yarn bunch in half to create the end of the tassel and fluff the ends.

    • 6

Thread the looped end of the longer yarn -- the side opposite the tassel -- through the hole on the bookmark. Feed the tassel through the loop and pull tight to secure the tassel to the bookmark.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use two colors for the 3-inch pieces to create a dual-colored tassel.
