How to Make a Thomas Bangalter Helmet With Lights
In a 2007 interview with Pitchfork, the Daft Punk duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were asked who came up with the multimedia elements in their show, including their illuminated helmets. "We personally worked as much on the music as on the different elements," said Thomas. It isn't common for musicians to spend equal amounts of time on their sound and look, but Daft Punk is different; the atmosphere of their show is almost as important as their music. To create a Thomas Bangalter helmet of your own for a party or Halloween costume, you don't need hours of work. With a few basic materials, you can make one in under an hour.
Things You'll Need
- Newspaper
- Black motorcycle helmet
- Silver transparent glaze paint
- Paintbrush
- Red glow sticks
- Clear tape
Instructions
-
-
1
Set the black motorcycle helmet upright on sheets of newspaper with the eye shield facing you.
-
2
Paint the entire eye shield with silver transparent glaze paint if the shield is clear. If the shield is silver or another dark color, you don't need to paint it.
-
-
3
Allow the paint to dry for at least one hour.
-
4
Consult a photo of Thomas Bangalter wearing his black, glow-in-the-dark helmet. You'll use this photo as a guide to where to place the glow sticks.
-
5
Make two circles with the glow sticks that are about 1.5 inches in diameter. Tape the circles to the side of the helmet to act as ears.
-
6
Tape one glow stick across the top of the head from ear to ear.
-
7
Tape another glow stick to the back of the helmet that goes from above one ear, along the base of the helmet, to the top of the opposite ear.
-
8
Tape a glow stick to the front of the helmet that goes from above one ear, under the chin, to the top of the opposite ear.
-
9
Surround the eye shield with a glow stick and attach it with clear tape.
-
10
Tape a glow stick that follows the top line of the eye shield; it should go from one ear to the opposite ear. This glow stick gives a depth to the face shield seen on Thomas's helmet.
-
11
Form a glow stick into a square and tape it to the helmet just under the eye shield. This square shape is the mouth for the helmet.
