How to Make a Snatch Block

A snatch block is a device composed of a pulley and two pieces of steel. These devices are threaded with rope and used for a variety of activities, including hoisting and towing. Because of their uses they are frequently used for sailing and with towing recreational vehicles or other trailers. While these devices are available through commercial manufacturers, you can make your own snatch block in your shop, in order to make it the size you want.

  • 1/4-inch steel plates
  • Measuring tape
  • Angle grinder
  • Compass
  • Pulley

Instructions

    • 1

Measure two separate pieces of steel that are 6 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. You can make these plates any size, based on how big you want the body of the snatch block to be; however, this is a standard size for most pre-manufactured snatch blocks.

    • 2

Cut out the snatch block plates from the steel plate using your angle grinder.

    • 3

Measure about 1 inch down from one of the long ends of the plate. Use a compass to mark a circle of the diameter you will need for attaching the snatch block to your rigging device. Repeat this process with the other plate, then cut the circle out using a torch.

    • 4

Measure about 1 1/2 inches up from the other long end of the plates. Drill a hole in each plate at this place that is the same diameter as the pulley mount.

    • 5

Put one side of the pulley mount through one of the holes you just drilled in the steel plate, so that the hole close to the top is facing up. Secure it in place using a washer, nut and bolt that will fit over the pulley mount. Repeat this process with the other side, making sure that the top holes on each plate are aligned.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the strength of the snatch block by towing or hoisting loads similar in weight to the object you will be moving before using the snatch block.

  • Always wear proper safety gear when using an angle grinder and cutting torch.
