How to Trim Lines & Bleed Export to a PDF in Illustrator

Trim marks show where a document will be cut after it's printed. Bleed is the amount a design goes past the trim mark and bleed is necessary so that colors in a design go all the way to a document's cut edge. You have the option to include trim marks on PDFs you export from Illustrator and you can include the document's bleed as well. Including trim marks and bleed in a PDF let you check to ensure the document is properly formatted for printing, and some commercial printers may require them in your PDFs.

      Click on "File" from the Illustrator menu and select "Save As" to export your illustration to a PDF.

      Select PDF as the type of file you want to create, specify a file name and location and click the "Save" button.

      Click on "Marks and Bleeds" from the options menu on the left of the "Save Adobe PDF" dialog box. Check the "Trim Marks" box to add trim marks to your PDF. Check the "Use Document Bleed Settings" box to export your PDF with the bleed specified in the Illustrator document or specify custom settings.

      Click the "Save PDF" button to export your PDF with trim marks and bleed.
