Make paper chef's hats for your little kitchen helpers.

Create a paper chef's hat for an easy Halloween costume, or make one hat for each of your little helpers when you are working in the kitchen with children. The hats are simple to make and use basic supplies from around the home. Each hat can be customized to fit the wearer perfectly with a paper band, and then the hats are decorated with accordion-folded paper shaped to look like the chef's hat. Make the hat from traditional white paper, or show off your colorful side and make a hat from a variety of different color paper.

Things You'll Need

  • Staples (tape or glue optional as well)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the circumference of your head and add an inch. Cut a piece of card stock or posterboard to this length by 1 1/2 inches wide. Bring the short ends of the strip together and tape, staple or glue the ends together.

    • 2

Lay three long sheets of tissue paper on a clean work surface. Fold over 1/2-inch at one short end of one piece and smooth along the crease. Fold another 1/2-inch of fabric back over top of the first fold and smooth along the crease. Repeat all the way across the tissue paper to make the accordion fold. Repeat for each piece of tissue paper.

    • 3

Grasp the short ends of one accordion fold. Staple one end on the inside of the card stock circle. Staple the other end of the accordion fold to the circle, directly across from the first staple.

    • 4

Grasp the short ends of another accordion fold. Staple the ends on a perpendicular angle to the first accordion fold. (The folds should now resemble a "t" shape.)

    • 5

Staple the short ends of the remaining fold on a different angle to the first two pieces.

    • 6

Pull open the top accordion fold in the hat. Fluff it out into the chef's hat shape. Pull the next accordion fold open and then pull open the final accordion fold to fill in any gaps in the hat.
