Make a pullover bib for a child.

Most parents know that bibs from the store are useless when it comes to keeping toddlers and children clean. Not only are the neck holes too small for anyone but babies, but the bib portion is too small to keep the child clean. You can make your own bib from a hand towel that will be large enough to keep the child’s entire shirt clean, and possibly his lap as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand towel
  • 6-inch bowl or plate
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • 1/8 yard of knit ribbing
  • Pins
  • Serger

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the towel with the wrong side up on a flat surface. Place the bowl or plate on top of the towel. Center it on the top long edge, about 4 inches from the top. Trace around it with the marker.

    • 2

Cut around the circle, without cutting the rest of the towel. To do this, fold the towel in half lengthwise and cut a small slit in the middle of the circle. Then unfold the towel, insert the blade of the scissors in the slit and cut around the circle.

    • 3

Mark the circle in the towel into quarters with pins. Place pins at the top and bottom and then on each side.

    • 4

Cut a 5 1/2-inch by 15-inch rectangle from the knit ribbing. Cut it so that the ribs are vertical when the fabric is horizontal.

    • 5

Fold the ribbing in half with the short sides together and serge the short edges.

    • 6

Fold the long sides of the ribbing together and mark the circle into quarters with pins.

    • 7

Place the ribbing inside the circle in the towel and match up the pins. Pin them together where the pins match up.

    • 8

Serge around the neck edges to attach the ribbing to the towel. Stretch the towel to make it match the ribbing. When you get all the way around to where you started, continue serging for another 1/2 inch to secure it. Remove the pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to remove all pins before placing the bib on a child.
