How to Extrude a Pipe

3D modeling is the primary technology behind CGI moves and video games. There are a vast number of applications used for 3D modeling, ranging from the simple and free to the complex and pricey. Learning how to use these programs to create something as simple as a pipe can be a challenge if you have never done it before. Still, knowing how to create a pipe is an important skill to have when modeling. In some programs, such as Cinema 4D, you don't actually have to do an extrusion to get a pipe.

Instructions

  1. Wings 3D

    • 1

      Start Wings 3D.

    • 2

Right-click in the view and click on the little square next to “Cylinder.” Enter the dimensions you want for the cylinder and click “OK.”

    • 3

Select the top polygon. Right-click and choose “Inset.” Drag to create the thickness for your pipe.

    • 4

Select the ring of polygons at the top. Right-click and choose “Shell Extrude.” Drag upward to make the pipe shape. Select all of the polygons that made up the cylinder shape and delete them. Save your work.

    Hexagon

    • 5

      Start Hexagon.

    • 6

Click on the Cylinder “Primitive” at the top and drag in the view to draw it out. Go to the “Properties” on the right and set the “Pts” to 20, then click “Close All.”

    • 7

Select the top polygon. Click on the “Vertex” modeling tab and click “Extrude Surface.” In “Properties” set to it to “Radial.” Drag it to make pipe thickness and click “Enter.”

    • 8

Click “I” to invert the selection, then click “Delete.” Select all of the polygons and click on “Fast Extrude.” Drag up to make the pipe shape. Save your work.

    Cinema 4d

    • 9

      Start Cinema 4D.

    • 10

Go to the “Primitives” at the top and click on the “Tube” shape.
