How to Crochet a Cluster Ring

Many round crocheted pieces begin with a cluster ring.

A cluster stitch is often used when a crochet pattern begins with a ring and expands in an ever-widening circle. Cluster rings are found in everything from fancy crocheted doilies to rugged granny squares. The stitch is created by linking three half-completed double-crochet stitches and binding them together with a chain stitch. Six or more cluster stitches around a ring of chain stitches creates a cluster ring.

Instructions

1. Chain six stitches. Join them with a slip stitch to form a ring.

2. Chain three stitches. Make a partial double crochet by wrapping the yarn over the crochet hook and inserting the hook into the front of the ring. Hook the yarn on the back side of the ring and pull the yarn through. You now have three loops on the hook. Hook the yarn and draw it through only two of the loops. Two loops should remain on the hook.

3. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook and insert the hook into the front of the ring again. Hook the yarn on the backside of the ring and pull it through. You now have four loops on the hook. Hook the yarn and draw it through two of the loops only. Three loops remain on the hook.

4. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook and insert hook into the front of the ring again. Hook the yarn on the backside of the ring and pull it through. You now have five loops on the hook. Hook the yarn and draw it through only two of the loops. Four loops should remain on the hook.

5. Hook the yarn and draw it through all four loops. Chain one stitch. This completes the cluster stitch.

6. Make six or more cluster stitches in the chain ring, as directed by the crochet pattern, to create a cluster ring.

Tips & Warnings

• The crochet pattern you use will tell you how many chain stitches to use to start the ring, the number of chain stitches between each cluster stitch and the number of cluster stitches to make. The chain stitch that completes the cluster stitch is often not specifically mentioned in a pattern, but it is combined with the chain stitches between each cluster stitch.
