How to Make an Easy Wool Diaper Wrap

Wool is an excellent material for cloth diaper covers because it is breathable and natural. When treated with lanolin, it becomes waterproof. Buying wool diaper covers in stores is often expensive, but you can make your own with only minimal sewing skills.

Instructions

  1. Felt the Wool Sweater

    • 1

Place the sweater inside a laundry bag or zippered pillowcase and put it in the washing machine.

    • 2

Set the washing machine for the longest cycle available with the hottest wash temperature.

    • 3

      Wash the sweater, using detergent.

    • 4

Dry the sweater on the hottest setting in the dryer.

    Make the Wrap

    • 5

Lay the sweater on a flat surface. Place the diaper on top of it. You will use this for your pattern.

    • 6

Stretch the elastic of the diaper so the material lies flat on the sweater, and draw an outline of the diaper onto the felted sweater with the fabric pen. You do not need to leave extra material for a hem; felted wool does not unravel.

    • 7

Cut the sweater along the line you have drawn.

    • 8

Stretch elastic along the curve of the wrap where the leg will be on one side. Cut a piece long enough to stretch along the entire length of the curve. Do the same on the other side.

    • 9

Sew both pieces of elastic onto the inside of the wrap, using a zigzag stitch. Stretch the elastic as you sew.

    • 10

Place elastic along the back of the wrap, stretching it to measure. Cut to a length so that when stretched, the elastic is as long as the front edge of the wrap.

    • 11

Sew the elastic onto the back edge of the wrap using a zigzag stitch.

    • 12

Cut a piece of the hook velcro long enough to reach across the front of the wrap. Leave about 1/2 inch between the end of the velcro and the edge of the material on both sides.

    • 13

Sew the strip of hook velcro onto the front of the wrap.

    • 14

Cut two tabs of the loop velcro. Each tab should be about 1 inch long. Sew the tabs onto the inside of the wings of the back edge of the wrap.
