When you remove a song from iTunes, it is deleted from your hard drive.

As your iTunes music collection grows, you might end up with duplicate tracks in your library. Perhaps you uploaded the same CD twice, or purchased music that you forgot you already had, but in any case duplicate files are a waste of space on your computer hard drive. Luckily, removing a file from your iTunes library is quite easy. If your library is extensive, identifying the duplicate tracks may take a few minutes, but the actual removal takes mere seconds.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iTunes on your computer and click the "View" tab in the toolbar at the top of program window.

    • 2

Choose "As List" from the "View" menu. Your music library will be organized so that each individual track has its own line, and songs may be sorted by any aspect of the files, such as title or release date.

    • 3

Click on the "Name" heading to sort your songs by title. The songs are listed alphabetically, making the identification of duplicate titles easier, as songs with the same title will be placed next to each other.

    • 4

Scroll through your library, paying attention to the "Name" column. When you identify a duplicate title, click on it once to highlight it. Hit the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

    • 5

Click the "Remove" button, if prompted, to confirm that you want to delete the file. If you don't want to be prompted for confirmation in the future, check the box next to "Do not ask me again" before you click "Remove."
