How to Make a Hairpin Lace Scarf

Hairpin lace was popular during the Victorian era when women literally used hairpins and very fine thread to crochet this delicate lace. Today, larger thread or yarn is used on looms specially made for this type of lace. The lace strips work up quickly and can be joined together to make shawls, scarves and blankets. The modern looms are adjustable, so more delicate lace can be made with smaller thread for edging and embellishments for clothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the loom for the width of the lace desired. Leave the bottom of the loom off for now. Make a slipknot in the yarn and slide it over the left pin of the loom. Pull the loop out long enough that the knot is centered between the pins of the loom. Replace the bottom of the loom.

    • 2

Hold the knot in the center of the loom with the left hand. Wrap the working end of the thread to the front of the right pin and around it to the back. Hold the working thread as you would in regular crochet. Insert the hook from bottom to top in the front loop to the left of the knot. Yarn over and pull a loop through to the front. Work one chain stitch.

    • 3

Hold the crochet hook vertically and turn the loom from right to left forming a loop over the pin that was on the left. Pull the hook to the front and insert it from bottom to top in the front loop on the left. Pull up a loop through it. Yarn over and pull a loop through both loops on the crochet hook. Repeat until the lace is the desired length. Tie off and cut the yarn as in regular crochet.

    • 4

Make another strip of hairpin lace the same length as the first one. Lay the two strips of lace side by side with the starting edge at the bottom. Make a slipknot and insert the crochet hook through it. Insert the hook in the first loop of the left strip of lace from bottom to top, then through the first loop on the right strip from bottom to top. Pull the loop on the hook through both the hairpin lace loops and work one chain stitch.

    • 5

Insert the hook through the next loop of each strip, draw the yarn through both loops and work one single crochet. Join the remainder of the loops in the same manner.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your loom is full before the lace is the length you want it, remove the bottom and slide all but the last four loops off the loom. Replace the bottom of the loom and continue.

  • Make as many strips as necessary to produce the desired width.
