Make a vintage wedding headpiece with silk flowers and millinery netting.

Vintage wedding headpieces are hair clips, headbands or hair combs adorned with flowers, feathers, rhinestones and millinery netting. These headpieces are worn by the bride in place of a traditional long tulle veil. The netting on a vintage headpiece can be long enough to cover the face, also called a bird cage veil, or short enough to cover some of the bride's hair as a background to the flowers. You can make your own vintage headpiece to create a personalized accessory that matches your wedding dress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the millinery netting on a flat work surface. Cut the netting to a 9-by-14-inch rectangle with a pair of scissors.

    • 2

Thread a sewing needle with thread that matches the color of the netting. Sew running stitches along the edge of the netting, beginning along one of the shorter edges. Sew the stitch across one of the lengthwise edges and then down through the remaining shorter edge.

    • 3

Pull on the ends of the thread to gather the netting. Adjust the gathers until the netting is shaped as desired. Tie knots in the ends of the thread to secure the gathers. Sew the gathered edge of the netting to the straight edge of a hair comb.

    • 4

Cut out a 2- to 3-inch circle from a piece of white felt. Remove the leaves and stems from three medium silk flowers.

    • 5

Lay the felt circle on the work surface. Arrange the flowers into a grouping on the felt circle. Use a hot glue gun to glue them in place. Place drops of glue on the ends of feathers and tuck them in between the silk flowers. Press their ends to the felt to secure them in place. Glue small sprays of filler flowers between the flowers over the feathers. Glue rhinestones or pearls to the centers of the silk flowers.

    • 6

Position the flower arrangement on top of the netting attached to the hair comb. Turn the flowers until they are in the desired position. Glue or sew the felt backing through the netting to the comb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use silk flowers and feathers in shades of white or cream that match the netting.
