How to Edit a Path Within an Envelope

If you want to distort objects in Adobe Illustrator, you do so through envelopes. An image’s path – that is, its transition from one visual state to another – can be contained within an envelope. This allows you to run the transition and undo it repeatedly. Editing the path within an envelope is relatively simple. You just have to access the envelope controls to change the transition path without changing the base image.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the image in Illustrator and click the “Layers” window.

    • 2

      Click the envelope layer.

    • 3

Select “Envelope Distort” in the “Objects” menu.

    • 4

      Click the “Edit Contents” button.

    • 5

Select a new path or modify the current transition path. How you do so depends entirely on what path you are modifying, but the path controls are the same as they are when you create a path from scratch.

Close the window and click “OK” at the next window to save the changes.
