How to Crochet a Mohawk
Mohawk hats, knit or crochet hats that feature a crest of yarn similar to a Mohawk haircut, can be given as a gift, can show school spirit -- when the Mohawk is made in school colors -- or be worn just for fun. Not only do Mohawk hats keep your head warm, they allow you to show your playful side. Any hat can be made into a Mohawk hat, so you can choose whatever hat you want in order to show your style.

1
Crochet a hat in any style you want. The Mohawk will add weight, so a style that extends farther down the back and sides of your head will allow you to keep the hat on your head with a minimum of shifting. However, any style of hat can carry a Mohawk if you make it very fitted to your head.

2
Find the center spine of your hat, from forehead to nape of neck, by folding your hat in half. Pin the hat together to keep the spine straight as you work.

3
Single crochet a line of stitches down the center spine of your hat using the contrasting color of yarn. Make a slip knot in the yarn and slide it onto your hook. Push the hook through the stitch at the beginning of your spine, wrap your yarn around the hook, pull it back through the stitch and the loop on your hook. Continue down the spine of your hat to the nape -- you want the stitches to be tight to the hat because your Mohawk will be anchored on this line of stitches.

4
Cut your cardboard so that it is as wide as you want your Mohawk to be tall. Wrap the yarn you are using for your Mohawk around the cardboard and then cut it along one side. Each strand will be twice the length of your finished Mohawk.
-
5
Fold each strand of Mohawk yarn in half, forming a loop. Slide your crochet hook under the stitches that mark the spine of your hat, catch the loop and pull it through to the other side of the spine. Push the cut ends of yarn through the loop and pull on them to secure the yarn around the spine.
-
6
Repeat looping your Mohawk along the spine until it is full. You don't want to loop yarn all the way to the front edge of your hat -- this would leave full strands of yarn falling over your face. Stop adding yarn to the spine at the place in your hat that is at the top curve of your forehead. It will fall forward and cover the spine stitches but not so far forward that it is in your eyes.
-
7
Untwist the Mohawk yarn slightly with your fingers. This will give your Mohawk a more untidy appearance, or, if you are using bulky yarn, look a bit like dread locks. Remove the pins holding your hat together in half and wear it proudly.
