Instructions

    • 1

Define your court boundaries. Traditional volleyball courts are 60 feet long by 30 feet wide, with a net resting in the center that divides the court into two 30-by-30-foot sections; however, you don’t have to make a court this large if space doesn’t allow. Scale it down a bit if you can’t spare this much room. Measure and mark your selected space using landscaping stakes and rope.

    • 2

Edge around the pit with an edger, moving along your defined boundaries to mark off the court. Remove the stakes after completing this step.

    • 3

Hoe the section of yard you intend to use, removing the grass. Remove all sod and discard, as any grass left may start to sprout through your sand, ruining your court. Use a shovel to remove approximately 3 inches of ground and discard the dirt.

    • 4

Press plastic edging, typically used for garden surround, into the divot around the perimeter you created when you edged. Align this edging with the grassy land bordering the court. Because this edging is generally quite malleable, it won’t present a danger to players’ toes.

    • 5

Fill the section with sand. Add sand until the pit is level with your lawn. Use a rake to level the sand.

    • 6

Loft a net in the center of the space using a pole setup (either removable stakes or cemented wooden beams placed outside the playing surface).
