How to Make Kid's Tie Fabric Headbands

How to Make Kid's Tie Fabric Headbands thumbnail
A fabric headband is a simple way to get your child's hair out of her face.

Even for kids, cute fabric headbands can be grossly overpriced at department stores and boutiques. Rather than spend the extra money on such a small and simple accessory, make your own at home with whatever fabric your child likes. Making your own will not only give you the satisfaction of self reliance, you can tailor the headband to your child's specific tastes and measurements. Once you get the hang of the craft, you may even be inclined to give your fabric headbands as gifts to your child's friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around your child's head where the headband will go. Add 8 to 12 inches to the measurement.

    • 2

Mark the length measurement on the piece of fabric you intend to use for the headband. For the width of the headband, measure twice the width that you would like the headband to be plus 1/4 inch. Mark the final measurement on the fabric. Your headband can be as thin as 1/2 inch or as thick as 3 inches.

    • 3

Cut out the measured strip of fabric. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, with the display sides of the fabric facing in. Iron the fold to crease it.

    • 4

Sew the all the way along the long side of the strip one-fourth inch in from the edge.

    • 5

Turn the headband right-side out by pushing the fabric through one of the open ends.

    • 6

Wrap the headband centered around your child's head so there are equal amounts of fabric on each end. Mark on the fabric the place where it comes together in the back of your child's head.

    • 7

Measure the length of the hair tie from one side of the loop to the other. Subtract half the length of the hair tie from each side of the mark on the headband. Make a new mark at this measurement.

    • 8

Slip one end of the headband through one end of the hair tie until the hair tie reaches the mark you just made. Fold the end of the headband over the hair tie at the mark. Sew the headband so the end of the hair tie is encased in the fabric of the headband. Repeat for the other end of the headband.

    • 9

Place the headband over your child's head. The elastic of the hair tie will allow the headband to fit snugly without falling off. Tie the remaining ends of the headband to hide the hair tie.
