Keep the keyboard working with a regular cleaning.

When you clean your home, you clean the bathroom and kitchen, but you don't always think about cleaning your laptop's keyboard. Over time, dirt and germs build up on the keyboard, especially if multiple people use the laptop. Grime and spilled food make the keys sticky and difficult to use, and the germs can make you and other laptop users sick. Cleaning and sanitizing your laptop keyboard regularly helps you avoid these problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Portable vacuum
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton swab
  • Soft cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from its power source before you start to clean the keyboard.

    • 2

Suck up dirt and dropped food stuck between the keys with a small portable vacuum. These small vacuum cleaners usually have a brush attachment ideal for this task.

    • 3

Dust the keyboard with a soft, lint-free cloth. If caked-on dirt remains, dip a corner of the towel or a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol. Squeeze out excess alcohol so the cloth or swab is damp, not wet.

    • 4

Scrub the keys with the cotton swab or towel. The rubbing alcohol removes dirt, food stains and dried, sticky soda. After cleaning, let the keyboard air-dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you share your laptop with others, wash your hands before using it and ask others to do the same.

  • Don't use canned compressed air to clean the laptop keyboard. It seems like an easy way to clean, but it actually forces dirt and food crumbs deeper into the keyboard.
