How to Make a Good Zombie Day Costume

On World Zombie Day there's no shortage of mortified flesh, gore and tormented moaning from the throngs of carefully made-up undead. What great pains some revelers take to complete their presentations is easily evident. Some seem as though they've come straight off a "Day of the Dead" set, for there's so little visible of their former humanity. Broken legs, missing arms, yellowed teeth and other signs of decay help to make the show all the more convincing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire an outfit that suggests an occupation you, the undead, used to perform (such as a sports player, a businessman or a street worker). Cut small holes in random places on the articles with a pair of scissors. Use your fingers to expand and dramatize the holes, making them seem to have been inflicted in a fight with the living dead. Using your preferred type of fake blood (store-bought or homemade), spatter the outfit in random areas. Set the outfit on some dry dirt and stomp on it with bare feet to help suggest you're a recently risen corpse.

Exfoliate your skin wherever you plan to apply makeup and shave any areas where you plan to adhere latex skin effects (such as cuts, bruises and opened areas showing bones. Pour a little baking soda into your palm, add water and rub until a paste forms. Work the paste into areas where you plan to become whiter, greener or bloodier.

Stipple on talcum powder with a sponge to act as a base layer for the rest of your makeup. Daub on green-tinted foundation in areas you wish to enhance the appearance of skin decay. Apply eyeliner slowly close to the nose and a bit above it to give your eyes a sunken look. Scrape a comb dipped in fake blood across your clothes and face to simulate struggle or road rash. Add latex prostheses as directed on the product's packaging.

    • 5

Mix mousse or hair gel into your hair to give the appearance of a prepared corpse. Dry your hair and muss it up if you don't like the look to give the appearance of unkempt and dirty hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shave the areas where you plan to apply prostheses in order to avoid a painful removal process.

  • Exfoliate your skin before applying makeup to help it hold through the night.

  • When making fake blood, keep in mind that corn syrup is very sticky and perhaps not practical for a night on the town.

  • Make sure you don't have any chemical allergies before applying makeup or chemicals like latex to your skin.

  • Greasepaint will restrict your skin from breathing and is useful as a makeup choice for short periods only.
