How to Mount Gemstones When Sewing

How to Mount Gemstones When Sewing thumbnail
You can hand-sew gemstones onto fabric, for a touch of glitz and glam.

Gemstones sewn onto a fabric make a unique style statement, uplifting it from plain to posh. Add glitter to a plain top with crystals, fix gemstone buttons to a dress or embellish a fabric handbag with authentic or acrylic gemstones. Use flat-back gemstones with holes at the back, to easily sew them on to fabrics.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the fabric to be sewn with the gemstones. Washing will address any shrinkage issues. Spread out the fabric on a flat surface to even out any creases.

    • 2

Use good quality polyester sewing thread with a thread count of 50 to 60 nanometers. These polyester threads are abrasive-resistant and ideal for sewing gems on to fabric.

    • 3

Draw the design you intend to create with the gemstones or mark the area where you want to set the gemstones with a marker. Use an air-and-water soluble pen or a chalk pencil marker.

    • 4

Loop the thread through a standard 1/1/2-inch-long fine-hand sewing needle. Place a flat-back gemstone over the fabric on the area you marked out. Push the threaded needle from below the fabric, through the hole in the gemstone. Sew the gemstone in place by looping the threaded needle back through the fabric with a simple stitch. Secure it with a knot and snip off excess thread with scissors.

    • 5

Create straight stitches or zigzag stitches to sew the gemstones, if you have more than one gemstone to sew, depending on your design.
