How to Get the Model of a Webcam without the Box

Microsoft Windows automatically detects and installs the software for plug-and-play devices connected to the PC. If you need to know the manufacturer and product name for your webcam model but no longer have the box or manual that came with the webcam, you can look up the vendor and device ID in Device Manager -- a program used to manage the hardware installed to the computer -- and use the information you find to obtain the webcam's product details.

    • 1

Connect the external webcam to the computer if the camera is not built in to the monitor. Click "Start." Type "devmgmt.msc" into the search box. Press "Enter" to open Device Manager.

    • 2

Input the administrator's password, if prompted. Press "Enter" again. Expand "Imaging Devices."

    • 3

Double-click the webcam driver. Click the "Details" tab, then select "Device Instance Path" or "Hardware IDs" from the drop-down menu.

    • 4

Write down the set of numbers to the right of "VEN" and "DEV" to obtain the vendor and device IDs. For example, if the driver ID is "PCI\VEN_2000&DEV_1000," the vendor ID would be 2000, and the device ID, 1000.

    • 5

Exit from Device Manager. Open a browser and navigate to Click "Vendors by ID."

    • 6

Press "Ctrl" and "F" to open Find. Input the vendor ID into the dialog box, then press "Enter" to locate the vendor name.

    • 7

Select the vendor from the list. Press "Ctrl" and "F" on the vendor page, then enter the device ID into the dialog box. Press "Enter" to locate the device in the list and find the model of the webcam.

Tips & Warnings

  • The results in "Device Instance Path" may display "VEN" as "VID," and "DEV" as "PID."

  • If you can't find the exact model of your webcam on the vendor page, go to the vendor's website and view their products to identify the webcam by photo.

  • If your computer comes with a built-in webcam, go to the computer manufacturer's website to find out which model of webcam is included with your PC.
