How to Erase Specific Colors in Illustrator

The documents that you create using Adobe's Illustrator vector graphics software can contain dozens of different objects. Each object is made up of two elements: the stroke, which defines the edge of the object, and the fill, which covers the inner part of the object. If you want to erase either a specific fill or stroke color from an Illustrator document, use the program's selection tool to highlight all elements containing that color, then delete the color from the document.

Fill Color

Step 1

Launch Illustrator. Open the document from which you want to erase a specific fill color.

Click on an object that has the fill color that you want to erase. Illustrator selects the object.

Step 3

Click the "Select" menu, then click "Same" and "Fill Color." Illustrator selects all the objects in the document that have that fill color.

Step 4

Click the "Window" menu and select "Color." Illustrator pops up a window showing the currently selected color.

Click the "None" button, which looks like a white box containing a red diagonal line, in the Color window. Illustrator erases the specified fill color from the document.

Stroke Color

Step 1

Start Illustrator and open the document.

Click on an object that has the stroke color that you want to erase. Open the "Select" menu, click "Same" and select "Stroke Color."

Step 3

Click "Window" and select "Color." Press the "X" key to switch to the stroke color.

Step 4

Click the "None" icon in the Color window to remove the selected stroke color from the document.
