Experiment with different oils to see which one works best for you.

Using a weekly pre-shampoo oil treatment can make the difference between having healthy, strong and shiny hair and having dry, brittle, lackluster strands. Hair can be damaged on a daily basis. Whether you use heat from a hair dryer, curling iron, hot rollers or straightening iron, or whether you use chemicals to perm, straighten or color your hair, the damage can be substantial. Oils can be used to promote the health of your hair and repair damage. Instead of purchasing a commercial oil treatment, make your own at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place 1/4 cup of olive oil in a small mixing bowl.

    • 2

Add 1/4 cup of canola oil to the olive oil. As an alternative, use coconut oil or jojoba oil.

    • 3

Add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil to the bowl to add fragrance.

    • 4

Mix the ingredients with a spoon and pour the oil into a glass jar.

    • 5

Place the glass jar in a pan with hot water for two minutes to heat up the oil. As an alternative, pour some of the oil into a microwave-safe bowl and heat it in the microwave for approximately five seconds. The oil has to be warm and comfortable to the touch, not hot.

    • 6

Rinse your hair with warm water and pat it dry with a towel to remove excess moisture.

    • 7

Pour some oil in your hands and rub them together before applying it to your hair. Massage the oil into your hair and scalp, then comb it through your hair with a wide-tooth comb to thoroughly distribute the oil from the roots to the tips.

    • 8

Cover your hair with a plastic cap and warm towel. Warm a towel in a dryer and wrap the warm towel around the plastic cap to hold onto the heat and promote oil penetration. Leave the oil on your hair for at least 30 minutes.

    • 9

Rinse your hair with lukewarm water and wash it with a shampoo and conditioner made for your hair type.

    • 10

Pat your hair dry with a towel and style your hair as normal.
