Make velvet pansies realistic by using colors such as purple, blue and yellow. Some blooms have black lines radiating from their center or have a dark center called a face. Make several velvet pansies for a variety of projects. For instance, sew three or more pansies together to create a corsage. Glue single pansies to a hair clip or brooch pin. Gather several pansies together and wrap them in a lace handkerchief to make a bouquet reminiscent of the Victorian era. Glue pansies on picture frames or memento boxes. Sew pansies on clothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circular petal on a piece of heavy card stock to create a petal pattern and cut it out. The petals can be anywhere from 1 inch or more depending upon how small or large you want the pansy to be.

    • 2

Lay the petal pattern on the backside of the fabric and trace around the edges with a marker.

    • 3

Cut out petal pieces. Each pansy requires five petals.

    • 4

Apply a fast-drying fabric glue to the edges with a toothpick to prevent them from fraying.

    • 5

Embroider a buttonhole stitch around the outside of each petal with embroidery floss. Use a contrasting color, such as red on purple or a varying shade of the same color as the petal. To eliminate some of the bulk do not embroider the buttonhole stitch on the part of the petal that will lie under another petal.

    • 6

Sew long straight stitches with black embroidery floss from the center outward on the three bottom petals.

    • 7

Overlap the petals to create the shape of the pansy and bring a needle and black thread from the back of the bottom piece up through the top and then back down again. Make several stitches to secure the petals. Do not cut the thread.

    • 8

Bring the thread back up to the center and sew long and short stitches very close together to form the face of the pansy. Bring the last stitch to the bottom of the pansy, secure it with a knot and cut the thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make leafs with green velvet to attach to the pansies.

  • Use fabric glue to attach the pieces.

  • Do not iron or use iron-on interfacing, as it will damage the nap and crust the velvet.
