How to Add Contacts to an iPad for E-mail From Gmail

Setting up your Gmail account on an iPad does not automatically sync your contacts from your Google address book. This requires a manual sync through iTunes, at least for iPads running iOS 4.3 or earlier. Apple's contact manager can help you merge contacts if you have multiple listings for the same person or delete duplicate contacts. If you have more than one contact listed in Gmail with the same email address, your iPad can only import one of those listings due to the way Gmail identifies contacts, so you may need to enter the extra contact information manually.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • IPad sync cable
  • Connect your iPad to the computer you normally use to sync and back up your iPad.

  • Install any available software updates for iTunes and iOS. Your computer should notify you if these are available, so you only need to click "Update" and wait for the update to complete.

  • Click your iPad's name in the iTunes "Devices" list, and then choose the "Info" tab. If your iPad automatically starts to sync, allow this process to complete before proceeding.

  • Click "Sync Contacts With" and choose "Google Contacts" from the drop-down menu if you are on a PC. On a Mac, choose "Sync Address Book Contacts" and "Sync Google Contacts."

  • Select "Configure" and enter your Gmail user ID and password.

  • Select "OK," and then allow your contacts to sync. If the sync does not begin automatically, click "Sync" or "Apply."

  • Disconnect your iPad after the sync is complete. Your Gmail contacts will be available from on your iPad.
