How to Clean a Hand-Scraped Wooden Floor

Clean hand-scraped wooden floors just as you would any wooden floor, but follow the recommendations from wood flooring manufacturers and flooring associations. They do not recommend using cleaners that can leave a film or residue, or oils, soaps or cleaners with ammonia. These cleaners can dull the finish and leave a residue that will not only prevent you from getting the floor sufficiently clean, but it may also make it more difficult to refinish the floor later. They do recommend cleaning the floor regularly to keep dirt and dust to a minimum and, if wet cleaning is necessary, it's best to use a professional hardwood floor cleaner. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep up any large pieces of debris on the floor.

    • 2

Run a dry microfiber head mop across the floor to remove any remaining dust or surface debris.

    • 3

Spritz hardwood floor cleaner directly on a clean microfiber head mop or on the floor. Do not saturate the floor or mop head. Apply a very light layer so that there is no excess moisture left on the floor. Excessive water or other chemicals left standing on the floor can cause the wood to buckle.

    • 4

Run the mop in smooth strokes across the floor, working with the wood of the grain.

    • 5

Buff the floor with a soft cloth after mopping to remove any soap residue and to make the floor shine. Rub the cloth across the floor in a circular motion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean up spills and sticky spots immediately with a damp cloth.

  • Place furniture pads underneath the legs of any furniture that sits on your hand-scraped wooden floor. They protect the floor from scuffs and other damage.

  • Cloth diapers are absorbent, soft and work well for buffing the floor.
