How to Close Friendship Bracelets

How to Close Friendship Bracelets thumbnail
First popular in the 1970s, friendship bracelets can be tied closed to give added security.

Traditionally, a friendship bracelet should be worn until it falls off as a symbol of an enduring friendship. Although friendship bracelets are made of macrame knots and tend to be durable, you might need to take it off, especially in situations where it could be damaged or soiled. Knotting the loose ends makes a secure tie to close a friendship bracelet.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the remainder of the threads so that each end is at least as long as the knotted part of the bracelet.

    • 2

Tie an overhand knot at the end of each group of loose strands.

    • 3

Trim the ends again, being careful not to cut too close to the knot.

    • 4

Coat the loose threads with a drop of clear nail polish or clear glue. This will secure the knot and prevent the ends from fraying.

    • 5

Tie the bracelet around a wrist with a square knot or bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Braid or twist the strands before securing them with an overhand knot for extra durability.

  • Tie beads into the overhand knots at the ends for extra stability.

  • Apply glue or nail polish in a well-ventilated area.
