Make a custom hammock for a child aged 4 to 8.

When you are organizing your backyard, you may want to hang up relaxing hammocks between the trees for your family and friends to lounge in. However, most store-bought hammocks are full-sized, and can be difficult to manage for a small child. One solution is to make your own small-sized hammock. This enables you to customize the sizing of the hammock to perfectly suit your children. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out a rectangle from linen fabric using scissors to measure 48 inches wide, 60 inches long.

    • 2

Punch out six 1/2-inch holes along both short sides, spacing each hole 8 inches apart.

    • 3

Place the male section of a grommet onto the bottom of a grommet press, then place the female section of the grommet into the top of the grommet press. Position the grommet press over one of the punched-out holes, then clamp the press together until you hear a "click." This secures a grommet onto one of the punched-out holes in the fabric.

    • 4

Repeat this process to secure grommets onto all of the punched-out holes in the fabric.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of twine using scissors to measure 60 inches long each.

    • 6

Thread a piece of twine through each of the grommets on one end of the fabric. Pull the ends together. Tie the twine into a knot close to the fabric, leaving the ends of the twine loose and long to tie around a tree.

    • 7

Repeat to inert the other piece of twine through the grommets on the other side of the fabric, knotting it in the same manner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use colorful fabric to create a more whimsical-looking hammock.

  • Keep sharp scissors, straight pins and sewing needles out of the reach of children.
