How to Knit a Newborn Roll Brim Cap
Knitting hats and other gifts for newborns is a creative and thoughtful way to welcome the babies into the world. Roll brim hats sized specially for newborns use less than one medium skein of yarn to create, so you can craft multiple hats from one skein or use the leftovers for other projects. Use a soft yarn when knitting a hat for a baby, as scratchy yarns tend to chafe soft heads.
Things You'll Need
- 133 yards soft, worsted-weight yarn
- 4 U.S. size 7 double-pointed needles
- Stitch marker
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle

1
Cast 72 stitches with the yarn onto one of the double-pointed knitting needles. Divide the stitches onto three needles, making sure not to twist them around the needles. Join them into a round by knitting the first cast one stitch. Place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
-
2
Knit each stitch of the first round. Then, knit every stitch of every following round until the hat measures 5 1/2 inches. The first 1 inch of the bottom of the hat will have rolled up on the outside of the hat, so you will have to unroll it to measure the entire hat body.

Knit the first six stitches of the next round, then knit two stitches together. Repeat this pattern to complete the round.
-
4
Knit the first five stitches of the next round, then knit two stitches together. Repeat this pattern to complete the round.
-
5
Knit the first four stitches of the next round, then knit two stitches together and repeat the pattern to complete the round. Continue decreasing the number of stitches between knit-two-together decreases by one on each following round until 18 stitches remain on the needles.
-
6
Knit the first two stitches of the next round together. Continue knitting two stitches together to complete the round.
-
7
Cut the yarn with scissors and thread the end through the tapestry needle. Draw the needle from left to right through the remaining stitches while removing them from the knitting needles. Tug the yarn tightly to secure. Weave in the loose ends.
