How to Make Vases With Stonex Clay
Pottery is a craft that yields beautiful pieces to display around the home when mastered. While some styles of clay require baking in an oven after molding to create a hardened final product, Amaco's stonex clay is an air-drying clay. As air drying clay does not require the use of a kiln, it is easier for many beginning craft workers to use from the comfort of home. A vase is a basic clay craft that, once completed, allows for a beautiful centerpiece on a table once flowers are placed inside.

1
Press the clay between your hands to remove air bubbles, then lay the clay on a flat surface and roll the clay until it reaches your desired vase thickness.
-
2
Hold a straight edge across the top of the flattened clay and cut a straight line to serve as the flat bottom of the sides of the vase.
-
-
3
Carve the desired shape for your vase into the flattened clay, being sure the total width of the carved section is wider than the circumference of your cylindrical guide item. For example, for a vase with a tall back that slopes down in the front, cut two lines 6 inches straight up from the sides of the bottom line, then an arcing shape connecting the tops of those lines that is at its tallest in between the two ends.
-
4
Place a cylindrical object on the clay so the bottom of the object is aligned with the first straight cut through the clay.
-
5
Wrap the clay around the cylindrical object so that one flap overlaps the other. Remove the cylinder once the clay is wrapped.
-
6
Drip water along the point the flaps overlap, then wipe along the contact point with your finger to join the two flaps of clay together.
-
7
Place the clay cylinder atop a rolled section of clay, then cut out a circle of clay to match the shape of the bottom of the clay cylinder.
-
8
Wet the bottom of the cylindrical section and the top of the circle cutout, then place the cylinder atop the circle and rub along the point the two pieces come together to join them as a single piece.
