How to Crochet a Granny Round
Granny squares are an old-fashioned crochet project with many variations. They range from a simple four-round square to complex patterns incorporating raised pinwheel and flower designs. Many crocheters work each round of a granny square in a different color, then sew or crochet them together to make colorful afghans and blankets. Once you master the technique of making granny rounds, continue adding rounds to make your granny square as big as you want it.

1
Begin granny squares with a crochet chain. A basic pattern calls for a four-stitch chain which you join into a ring with a slip stitch. Work the stitches of the first round into the ring, and join every round with a slip stitch.
-
2
Chain three stitches at the beginning of each round. The chain counts as the first double-crochet stitch.

3
Work in groups of three double-crochet (DC) stitches. To make the first round, follow the three-stitch chain with two more DCs. Chain three, then work another group of three DCs. Continue making clusters of three DCs and following each cluster with a chain-three. When you have four clusters of three stitches, slip stitch the last chain-three together with the top stitch of the first chain-three.
-
4
Construct every corner of every round out of two clusters of three DCs with a chain-three between them.
-
5
Chain only one stitch between clusters when not working a corner. In the second round of the square, use a chain-one on the sides of the square, between corner clusters. When you come to these chain-one spaces in the next round, work a single grouping of three DCs into them. After the first round, only make three-stitch chains in the corners of the square.
