How to Mount a Scrape Bar on a ZX6R
Scrape bars are popular accessories among ZX6R riders who perform style tricks that include rear wheel stands. The bar extends from the back of the bike -- preventing the motorcycle from elevating beyond vertical and going over backward. In addition to safety, a properly mounted a scrape bar adds stability to the bike’s sub-frame. Mounting a square or round scrape bar on your Kawasaki ZX6R is not difficult. The job requires typical hand tools and an average degree of mechanical aptitude. Mount a scrape bar on your ZX6R and perform wheel stands with confidence.

Preparation

1
Loosen and remove the hex-head bolts at each side of the rider’s seat with a metric hex wrench. Lift the seat off the seat dampers at the upper frame tubes of the bike, and set it aside.
-
2
Remove the hex-head bolts at the right and left side-covers, above the foot pegs. Take off the covers, and save the bolts.
-
-
3
Reach under the rear fender, and disconnect the taillight and turn signal wire connectors from the light and each turn signal. Allow the wires to rest atop the rear tire, for now.
-
4
Loosen and remove the rear fender/fairing bolts at each side of the frame, with a metric socket and ratchet. Lift the fender/fairing and light assembly off intact. It’s not necessary to remove each separately.
-
5
Use a large metric socket and the ratchet to remove the sub-frame bolts at the right and left sides of the upper frame tubes, above the rear wheel. Save the bolts, nuts and lock washers.
Installation
-
6
Position the scrape bar above the rear wheel, so the notches in the forward ends of the bar fit over each end of the main swingarm rod in front of the rear tire. Align the bolt ports near the forward ends of the scrape bar with the mounts, where the sub-frame bolts were removed.
-
7
Attach the forward ends to the mounts using the saved bolts, nuts and lock washers. Tighten the bolts just enough so the bar remains suspended above the rear wheel, but can be moved up or down.
-
8
Lift or lower the rear of the scrape bar, as necessary, until the bolt ports on each side align with the mounts where the rear fender/fairing bolts were removed. Insert the saved fairing bolts into the ports temporarily, to keep the bar in position. Tighten the large sub-frame bolts securely.
-
9
Remove the temporary fairing bolts. Position the fender/fairing in place over the scrape bar. Align the bolt ports on each side. Attach the fender/fairing using the saved bolts. Tighten each bolt securely.
-
10
Reconnect the taillight and turn signal wires at the underside of the rear fender. Reattach the side covers with the saved bolts. Position the seat on the motorcycle, and align the seat dampers at the underside. Install and tighten the saved hex-head bolts at each side of the seat securely.
