Troubleshooting a Maytag Timer Switch

Maytag washers use a timer to advance from one cycle to the next. If the timer is faulty, the washer may not advance from cycle to cycle properly, or it may not start at all. Problems with both the timer and the water supply can create difficulties with changing cycles. If you determine that the timer is the issue, the only solution is to replace it. An appliance technician can replace it for you, but if you have some basic tools you should be able to do it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Observe whether the washer fills with water when you turn it on. If the washer fills with water but the cycle doesn't advance from wash to spin or from spin to rinse, the timer is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the timer advances but the water doesn't drain, there's a problem with your cold-water supply, and you may need to replace the hose.

    • 2

Order a new timer from Maytag. Give Maytag your washer's model number so that you get the right part.

    • 3

Unplug the washer before removing the timer.

    • 4

Remove the metal insert from the timer control knob, using a flat-head screwdriver. You can also pry it off with a small knife. Slide the clip off the timer assembly and remove the timer knob, dial and spring.

    • 5

Remove the timer by unscrewing both the back and front of the console with a Phillips screwdriver. Unplug wires one at a time from the old timer and attach them to the new timer. Put the new timer on the back of the console and secure it with the screws. Put the front of the console back together.

Plug the washer in. Run it to see if it works properly. If it doesn't, call an appliance repair technician.

Tips & Warnings

  • The wires should all be labeled so that you know where to plug them in to the new timer. Move wires one at a time so you don't get confused.

  • If your Maytag washer is still under warranty, let the technician troubleshoot and repair the timer so that you don't void your warranty.
