Take classes or obtain a degree in fashion styling and design from a local college or university. Coursework should include fashion design and merchandising. Obtain an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, or just take a few key courses. Your classes should give you a solid understanding of color, design and the fashion industry.

Gain experience through an internship or working as an assistant to an experienced stylist. Be prompt and professional so you begin establishing a good reputation and useful industry contacts.

Advertise your services. Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, and traditional media, such as a local newspaper, are possible advertising outlets. Offer free consultations to new clients and discounts to existing clients if they refer a new client to you.
