Lavender oil on cotton balls is effective in repelling mice and rats.

Lavender oil is an effective repellent for rodents, such as mice and rats, because they do not like the odor. A repellent is often the best method to control rodents for people who despise handling mousetraps and are hesitant to use poisons to rid their homes of rodents because they have small children and pets. Others avoid using harsh chemicals to protect the environment. Poison also has the potential drawback of causing rodents to crawl into hidden areas to die, resulting in a foul odor in your home. Along with other preventative methods, lavender oil prevents infestations if you use it in the proper manner.

Step 2

Place the eyedropper into the lavender essential oil and then release the bulb. This causes the syringe to fill with lavender oil.

Step 3

Remove the eyedropper and place eight to 10 drops of lavender oil on a cotton ball. Repeat this on several cotton balls.

Step 4

Place the scented cotton balls in areas where you have spotted droppings, damage from the pests or rodents. The pests often scurry around the bottom of cabinets or near walls.

Step 5

Leave the cotton balls in the area until they no longer emit fragrance. Repeat with fresh cotton balls and lavender essential oil until you no longer spot the rodents or any evidence they are in your home.
