How to Change the Name in Conference Chat in Pidgin

Chat room participants see your handle instead of your XMPP account name.

Pidgin supports conferences over the XMPP protocol, which function as chat rooms. You can define a distinct name, known as a handle, for each conference in Pidgin. Pidgin provides you with a handle option while joining a conference where you can set your name for that conference. If you want to change your name in a conference chat room without leaving the room, you can save the conference by adding it to your buddy list and use the Edit Settings window to change your settings for the conference.

Instructions

1. Click the “Conversation” menu in the conference chat room window and click “Add” to open the Add Chat window, and then click “Add” to add the conference to your buddy list if it isn’t already on your buddy list.

2. Right-click the name of your conference chat room on your buddy list and click “Edit Settings.”

3. Type a new name into the Handle box in the dialog window that appears.

4. Click the “Save” button to change your name in the conference.
