How to Draw Colored Lines in Illustrator

Colored Adobe Illustrator lines, or paths, are useful in illustrations and graphic design layouts. You can draw wide or thin lines, as well as a combination of both, with this application. Since there are countless variations of line sizes to draw in Adobe Illustrator, including long and short ones, it's possible to create a compelling composition consisting of only lines. Consider choosing a color scheme before you begin drawing these lines.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the "Pencil" tool to open up its options, then deselect the "Keep Selected" and "Fill New Pencil Strokes" options. Turning these options off allows you to draw a new line after you finish one without having to worry about fill colors.

    • 2

Activate the "Stroke Button" and establish a color for your first line. Double-clicking this button enables you to specify a color for your line from within the application's Color Picker.

    • 3

Establish the weight of your first colored line in the Stroke panel. Choose "Window" and "Stroke" to view this panel if it's not already in view.

    • 4

Click and drag the "Pencil" tool across the canvas area, then stop. Repeat drawing lines until you're satisfied. You can hold the "Shift" key down as you click and drag with the "Pencil" tool to constrain the angle of these lines to 45 degrees.

Choose the "Selection" tool and select the line or lines that you want to recolor, if necessary. You can modify the lines you choose to color by clicking the "Stroke" box again and selecting a new color.
