How to Change the Fill to Gradient in Illustrator CS5

Adobe Illustrator CS5 illustrations often feature multiple objects filled with color. Changing one or more of these fill colors to a gradient tends to increase an illustration's volume and energy. Subtle gradients can make a round object appear three-dimensional, while gradations featuring a wide array of colors will add vibrancy to your illustration. Considering how effective gradients can be, learning how to change a fill color to a gradient will expand your creative options.

Instructions

Click "File" and "Open" within Illustrator and open a document that contains objects with fills. Then, click the object where you want the gradient to appear.

Click a gradient from within the Swatches panel to apply it. Click the "Show Swatch Kinds" button, and then click "Show Gradient Swatches" if the gradient swatches aren't in view. You can also choose a gradient to apply to the object from the Gradient menu in the Gradient panel.
