The rubber surround is glued to the cone on a speaker.

Over time, the rubber surround on a speaker will deteriorate and need to be replaced. Replacement kits can be found online or at music store and run between $20 and $50, which typically includes the glue as well as the surround piece. To ensure a proper fit, buy the correct replacement kit for your speaker size and brand. Once you have removed all of the old surround and dried glue, you can re-glue your surround and cone and your speaker will be good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the speaker from your enclosure. Remove the grill, if applicable, by removing the screws holding it in place or simply pull it off if it is held in place with Velcro. Set the grill and screws aside so that you can reassemble the cabinet after you have glued the cone and surround.

    • 2

Unscrew the speaker from the enclosure. Unscrew each individual screw around the metal basket that holds it in place. Keep the screws together and place them aside. Carefully pull the speaker out of its hole just enough to reach the wires that connect it to the speaker jack. Carefully pull out the wires from the magnet as they are usually clipped into place. Place the speaker on a work bench or flat surface.

Remove the old surround. Over time, the surround deteriorates and needs to be replaced, which involves gluing a new one to the cone itself. Pull the old surround off carefully without damaging the cone and use a utility or razor knife to remove excess glue or material from the paper cone.

    • 4

Place the new surround into place so that it fits properly according to the included directions. Add glue to connect the cone and the surround. Place enough glue to cover the entire circumference, but not too much. Allow to dry for about 10 minutes. Push down on the cone to center the surround properly and allow to dry for about an hour or so before gluing the surround to the metal basket.

    • 5

Glue the other side of the surround to the metal basket. Apply glue to both the metal and the surround. Press the surround all the way around the circumference so that the glue is set. Allow to dry for about 5 minutes, and push the cone in once again to center the surround on the edge. Allow this final bead of glue to dry for a few hours before plugging the speaker in for use.
