Thickening a Sole on a Crochet Sock
Learning how to thicken a crocheted piece can mean the difference between functional and durable socks and socks that wear thin and unravel after just a few uses. Learning to double crochet is simple and requires no special knowledge or supplies. As long as you know how to make a single stitch crochet, you can make a double crochet.
Things You'll Need

1
Make a slipknot out of a complementary color of yarn. Insert the crochet hook into the slipknot.
-
2
Insert the crochet hook through the back loop of the stitch at the outer corner of the sole and the adjacent loop from the neighboring row as the first stitch is crocheted. This incorporates the new yarn stitches into the existing sole.
-
-
3
Crochet a row of single stitches across the diameter of the sole until the end is reached. Weave the yarn into the current row and the neighboring row as each stitch is made. Count the number of stitches created to reach the end of the sole.
-
4
Turn the crochet. Crochet additional rows using the same method of pulling the yarn into the current row and the next row as each stitch is made. Count each stitch to make sure each row has the same number of stitches.
-
5
Turn and crochet additional rows until the entire sole has been double crocheted and there is only two loops remaining that have not been double crocheted.
-
6
Insert the hook into the two loops from the adjacent rows as before. Make a slipstitch in these two rows. Do not make a single stitch.
-
7
Fasten off, cut and weave the tails into the crochet.
