How to Separate Wefts From a Wig thumbnail
Wigs are composed of wefts of hair that can be removed.

Wefts are long strips or segments of hair attached to netting. When placed next to each other, a collection of wefts form a wig. Wigs are worn for style and comfort and provide easy ways to temporarily change your look. If you can’t find the wig style you want or are trying to create a specific style for a costume, you can create one customized wig by removing wefts from one wig, styling them and attaching them to a second wig. Instructions

    • 1

Turn a cheap costume wig inside out so the netting is facing up. Locate the wefts of hair that make up the wig and appear as segments or strips of synthetic hair folded over each other and stitched to the wig.

    • 2

Locate the folded edge of a weft. Place the tip of a sharp, new seam ripper beneath the edge of the weft. Start at the right end of the weft and work your way toward the left end.

    • 3

Use the sharp cutter in the center of the seam ripper to disconnect the weft from the netting material. Make sure you keep the ripper beneath the weft. Avoid letting the ripper move up into the weft itself so you do not separate the strands of hair. You simply want to separate the weft from the wig.

    • 4

Attach the weft or part of the weft to a new wig with a teflon pressing cloth and warm iron as desired.
