1
Loosen the screws that secure your current set of tongs into the welder’s handle and pull the tongs out of the handle.
-
2
Measure the length of the tongs with a tape measure. The tongs are bent at a 90-degree angle and then ground to a taper at one end. You must measure around the 90-degree angle and to the tip of the ground end to obtain the entire length of the tong.

-
3
Measure the diameter of the tongs with a pair of dial calipers. Select a steel rod that measures the same diameter and then cut two pieces of rod to the correct length on a horizontal band saw.
-
4
Measure the length of the tong from the ground taper to the 90-degree bend. Transfer the measurement to one end of each freshly cut rod and place a mark to indicate the measurement.
-
5
Place the rods into a vice and line the mark up with the top of the vice. Bend the rods to a 90-degree angle in the vice.
-
6
Grind a 45-degree angled tip into the short end of each rod with a grinding wheel.
-
7
Place the rods into the handle of your spot welder’s handle and line the tips of the tongs up so they face each other. Tighten the screws on the handle to lock the tongs in place.
-
8
Bend the ends of the tongs together until the tips touch each other.
