Crochet a flower or butterfly to add to the beanie.

Beanies are a must-have fashion accessory for both males and females. They are quick, simple and inexpensive to crochet, and can be customized for children by using yarns in their favorite colors and adding cute embellishments such as flowers or brooches. These head warmers also make useful items to sell at craft fairs and fundraisers. Start crocheting at the crown and work in a circular manner, until the beanie is the size you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Join the yarn to your crochet hook with a slip stitch. Make a slip stitch by looping the tail of your yarn and pulling another loop through it that you slip onto the hook.

    • 2

Crochet three chain stitches and join them with a slip stitch to form a ring. Make chain stitches by wrapping your yarn from the back to the front of the hook and pulling it through the stitch on the hook.

    • 3

Crochet one chain stitch, followed by six single crochet stitches in the ring. Make single crochet stitches by inserting the hook into the stitch, wrapping the yarn from the back to the front of the hook and pulling it back through the stitch, so that there are now two loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook again. Draw the yarn through the two loops on the hook, leaving a new loop on the hook and completing the stitch.

    • 4

Crochet two single chain stitches into each of the six single crochet stitches in the ring, so that you now have 12 single crochet stitches.

    • 5

Crochet one single crochet stitch in the next single crochet, followed by two single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Keep working in this manner, until you are back where you started. Repeat this pattern for another round.

    • 6

Crochet two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and one single crochet stitch in each of the next three stitches. Keep working in this manner until you are back where you started.

    • 7

Crochet one single crochet into each of the the next four stitches and two single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Keep working in this manner until you are back where you started.

    • 8

Crochet two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and one single crochet in the following five stitches. Keep working in this manner until you are back where you started and repeat this pattern for one more round.

    • 9

Crochet one single crochet into each of the the next six stitches and two single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Keep working in this manner until you are back where you started.

    • 10

Make a slip stitch into the next stitch, followed by a chain stitch, and then make a single crochet into each stitch.

    • 11

Try the beanie on the child. If it is not long enough, continue crocheting single crochet stitches into each stitch, until it is long enough.

    • 12

Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitch on the hook. Thread the tail through a darning needle and sew a few stitches to secure the yarn before trimming off the excess.
