How to Be a Buyer for Jewelry

How to Be a Buyer for Jewelry thumbnail
Experience as a jewelry buyer often leads to a career in jewelry store management.

The jewelry-buying industry is somewhat recession-proof because people celebrate weddings, anniversaries and birthdays with jewelry, no matter the economy. Transitioning into a career as a jewelry buyer requires a combination of retail experience and education. The career path, however, is not always precise. Certain degrees or diplomas, while helpful, are not absolute requirements for entry into the jewelry buying industry. Perhaps the most important prerequisite for potential jewelry buyers is knowledge of the retail jewelry market.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a gemology diploma or take courses in gemology including jewelry design and jewelry casting. Although not an absolute necessity for entry into the jewelry industry, gemology courses will provide a foundation of knowledge that will give you confidence when searching for a job and dealing with those in the jewelry industry. Similarly, a diploma or degree in marketing, business or finance will improve career advancement opportunities in the jewelry buying industry.

    • 2

Gain experience working in the retail industry by starting out as a sales clerk for a jewelry store. If you cannot obtain a position in the jewelry industry, a sales position in a department store, preferably in the fashion or jewelry department, is also an effective stepping stone as it will provide valuable experience in sales and marketing.

    • 3

Attend trade shows on fashion and jewelry to gain more knowledge about jewelry quality and trends, and to network with jewelry retailers and wholesalers in the industry. Subscribe to newsletters from jewelry industry associations such as the Jewelers of America, the New York State Jewelers Association or the Mid-America Jewelers Association to keep abreast of current jewelry trends.

Target a few jewelry companies and read their websites regularly for updates on jewelry trends, as well as new job openings.
