How to Bring More Light Into a Basement

Basements often seem dark with limited amounts of natural light. The dark nature of basements makes it difficult or unpleasant to spend too much time there. You also miss out on lighting that makes tasks easier to complete. For example, poor lighting makes it difficult to read or play board games in the basement. Emphasizing natural light provides the most appealing light for most people. Using artificial light to fill in the gaps not offered by the natural lighting rounds out the basement lighting scheme. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove shrubbery and other plants or structures that block the windows you have in the basement. Clean the windows and get rid of the window treatments or use sheer curtains to maximize the light that filters through them.

    • 2

Install larger egress windows if enough of your basement extends above the ground. You may have the option of digging down below the ground level and installing a window well to accommodate the larger window. This is an expensive and complicated way of maximizing the light, and is best left to professionals. However, it is an option for more natural light in the basement.

    • 3

Paint the basement walls a lighter color to brighten the entire space. Choose a bright or neutral color. Use accent colors in your decor to contrast with the walls for the greatest effect.

    • 4

Install bright, reflective flooring in the basement, such as a shiny laminate wood flooring. This helps reflect the light present in the basement to create a brighter environment.

    • 5

Install overhead lighting fixtures throughout the basement to give the area general lighting and brightness. Hang wall light sconces for additional brightness. Place lamps and other task lighting in areas of the basement where you typically read or do other activities that require more light.

    • 6

Hang mirrors in the basement to make the space look larger and to reflect the light that comes into the space. Try different locations to determine where the mirrors are able to best reflect the natural light.

    • 7

Prop open the doors leading to the basement from the main level of the home to allow light from upstairs to reach the basement.
