How to Install Rivets on Dog Collars

Rivets can turn a plain leather dog color into a fashion statement. Choose plain, industrial-looking rivets for an edgy look, or choose decorative ones topped with Swarovsky crystals, gemstones or enameled metal. You can add a single rivet or several, spaced out along the length of the collar. The process of adding rivets is easy if you have the right tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose rivets that are the right size for the collar. Measure the thickness of the leather and choose a rivet size that is slightly larger than that measurement. If the rivet is too short it won't secure properly, but if it is too long it will be loose.

    • 2

Lay the collar flat on a table and decide where you want the rivets to go. Mark a small dot for each location.

    • 3

Choose the correct size punch on your multipunch tool to fit the rivet. The shaft part of the grommet will fit into the end of the punch perfectly if it is the right size.

    • 4

Place the correct punch over the first mark you made on the collar and press the handle together to make a hole. Repeat for any additional holes you want to make.

    • 5

Insert the back of a rivet into the first hole from the back side of the collar. Push it through the leather. Put the cap of the rivet onto the rivet shaft from the front of the collar.

    • 6

Slide the rivet anvil underneath the rivet base and position the rivet-setting tool over the cap. Tap the rivet-setting tool gently until the pieces of the rivet are securely fastened together.

    • 7

Repeat Steps Five and Six to install additional rivets.
